My worst webisms?

by Tom on December 8, 2008

A lot of webisms seem to serve no purpose other than to deliver some sort of interlectual superiority over the reader. Others are simply just stupid.

Here is my current hit list of annoying terms:

  • FTW – What on earth? I believe this is meant to mean ‘For The Win’, although this doesn’t really provide a lot of explanation.
  • woot – I think this may have originated from multi-player gaming and clans. I’m not even sure why this one annoys me so much, it’s not like I’m a strange to multi-player battlefield.
  • IMHO – Who talks like this? This is generally in a sentance where the author is being anything but humble.
  • FAIL – This seems like a fairly recent one and goes something like ‘Something something dah dah. FAIL’.

Any suggestions?

I still don’t get this FAIL one, either. Although here’s my attempt:

IMHO, you spelt sentence incorrectly. FAIL.

How’d I do?

Apparently w00t means ‘We Own the Other Team’ although this has been cited as being turned into an acronym latterly.

I should probably add WIN to the mix as well. I heard someone the other day (referring to a sandwich)…

“So much WIN between two slices of bread.”

WTF? ;)

Ok… I’m adding “PWNED” to the list.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one http://www.stopsayingfail.com/
