We’ve just put live what appears to be a simple blog (with no comments omg) for the South West RDA. This sounds strange I know. Essentially it’s an archive and resource for new and old press releases coming out of the south west of the UK.
We built the “press” theme for Wordpress from scratch so that we could control the accessibility level, while the XHTML does not validate (nor the CSS), it uses ARIA landmark roles which we are warming to a lot.
The clever stuff comes from the press system that we’ve built for Simple Web Management. This enables a user to build a social press release consisting of Youtube videos, Flickr pictures, links, additional notes and of course the release itself.
The release when published is sent to the Wordpress blog (via XMLRPC) where it is displayed and can be subscribed to with Feedburner. Allowing journalists to receive press releases as and when they are published. Visitors to the site can also subscribe via Twitter or good old RSS. All press releases can be shared or bookmarked individually via a variety of social networks and news sites.
The Press Room App for SWM also has the possibility to send the press release to more than one destination, such as Moveable Type, Joomla, Blogger, etc… Which opens up a whole new world of interesting things that we can do in the future.
