6 web apps to watch for 2008

by Mark on December 18, 2007

2008 is going to be an interesting year, Facebook dominated 2007, with Google entering 2008 strongly, but who else is coming?

Spokeo – Stalk your friends

This is as cool as it is scary… The sign up process is almost flawless, and once in, Spokeo scans your online email account for people based on your registration email and password. It then proceeds to check out various other online apps such as Linkedin, flickr, Digg, myspace, etc and gives you a running feed of their activity… This is how stalkers are born and is compelling in the same way facebook is/was…

23andme – I’m related to a pomegranate

Another super scary but wildly compelling startup and while not strictly a web app, the online features of 23andMe firmly put it in the next generation of web businesses. For $1000 find out where you come from, what diseases you are prone to and who your real father is…

Summize – Summarizing the web sentimentally

We like this one, while being Digg like, but as sexy, it also doesn’t seem to have the incredible comments that Digg has. You do genuinely get a good feeling as to whether a particular book, video, album is actually any good or not. While not strictly ready for prime time, this site is on its way to big things we think…

Joost – What BBCi should’ve been

What’s there to say about Joost? It’s great, it makes the BBCi player look low tech. It feels nice and bizarrely it’s “casual”, whenever I have 20 minutes to spare I’ll power up Joost watch something quick and interesting and power it off again. It can only get better, if only it was in my set top box… ;)

Pownce – Annoy your friends outside of Facebook

Personally I’m not keen on Pownce, however I can’t let my personal preference get in the way of the fact that Pownce is more than likely to overtake Twitter as the annoying “tweeting” platform of choice. With the addition of mobile recently and various other improvements on the way, I think we can safely say that this will most likely be the cool app of 2008

Pushhit – Not 2.0 Social

Ok, we know, shameful self plugging, but someone has to. Pushhit has seen fits and starts over the last year, currently being rebuilt in PHP (from .net). Team based communities distributing socially and scheming amongst themselves. Wasn’t Facebook like this once?

That’s it for us, what’s you app for 2008?
